The new Honda Civic is brilliant. If it wasn't on your shopping list, add it on and you'll thank me for the suggestion.

It's so far removed from any Civic that has come before, I'm having a hard time convincing people this car actually is a Honda Civic.

Other than that, we were impressed with the overall build quality, ergonomics, best-in-class legroom, and plenty of features showcasing Honda's thoughtful engineering and attention to detail—the center storage console, for example, is not only spacious but also features multiple tiers of sliding trays and cupholders, a USB port, and an armrest that's perfectly lined up with the one on the door. On the upside, the system reacts braking and reaccelerating fairly quick to those situations.

Honda Civic Touring Update 4: Honda Sensing - Motor Trend

Honda Sensing available on all trim lines. Honda's fully redesigned Civic is roomy enough to steal some attention from the midsize Accord, offers driver assists on all trim lines, and stands out as one of the best compact cars we've tested this year.

The tenth generation is the charm: The optional Honda Sensing driver-assist package brings stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and forward-collision warning to all trim lines, not just high-end models. The Civic is one of the best compact cars we've tested this year, and an easy pick for our Editors' Choice. The turbocharged models with continuously variable transmission CVT get 31 miles per gallon mpg city, 42mpg highway, and 35mpg combined, edging out close competitors such as the Toyota Corolla, the Hyundai Elantra, and the Mazda3.

The Civic Touring we tested includes Honda Sensing consisting of a millimeter wave radar that detects the speed and position of possible hazards and a monocular camera that detects the size and shape of objects and Garmin navigation, as well as LED headlamps, heated rear outboard seats, watt, speaker audio, and rain-sensing wipers. Technology Across the Trim Lines Often technology packages simply aren't available on lower trim levels, but that isn't the case with the Civic.

Every trim line except the LX comes with LaneWatch, Honda's camera-based blind spot detection system. LaneWatch is a side mirror camera that uses three reference lines to help indicate the relative positions of nearby vehicles.

Oddly, it comes only on the passenger side of the car, not on the driver side. Display Audio , Honda's glass-covered center stack LCD infotainment system, looks great and works well once you master the voice commands.

You'll adapt, but you may still miss those physical controls. The Civic does have buttons on the steering wheel, including a fascinating touch-slider volume control. Display Audio includes a small but useful selection of apps that can be controlled directly by the car interface, either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, including Pandora and Harman Aha's aggregated content.

HondaLink uses your phone's cellular data connection to provide searches, local weather, read-aloud text messaging with canned replies when the car is moving "Yes," "No," "Running late," and so on , and car-specific functions such as maintenance alerts, service scheduling by phone, and access to the owner's manual. And HondaLink Assist can make a mayday call. Honda used to offer rear sonar as a pricey dealer-installed accessory, but not with the tenth-gen Civic.

How Does It Perform? The Civic Touring was enjoyable to drive and to ride in, even in the heated back seat, which feels as roomy as that of a midsize car.

As for lane keeping assist and road departure mitigation, the Civic practically drives itself when you keep your hands lightly on the steering wheel.
